Journal # 6

(Written on Sept 5)

Strike Zone. Noun: Term used in Softball/Baseball – The area of your body (from around your shoulders to your knees) where, when batting, if the ball passes that, it’s called a ‘strike’ and you need to swing your bat. Noun: The name of a radio show of Magic 89.9 that airs from 10 PM to 2 AM.

Both of these definitions are significant in my life, but for now, I’m going to focus on the latter.

The atmosphere around me is crazy. Everyone is stressing about final projects, deadlines, lack of time… did I mention deadlines? It’s the time of the year when professors are setting these dates and they’re all saying the same thing: NO EXTENSION. It’s pressuring to work on a different subject every night, until the wee hours of the morning. You’re toiling at your computer, wrists sore from typing and clicking, back pains from slouching and muscle cramps from being in the same position the whole night.

So what does one do in this situation? Particularly what do I do? I play music.

Music tends to loosen me up and energize me for the long night that lies ahead. This evening, I chose to listen to the radio. And there I found my hero for the day. Josh Strike of the Strike Zone. A DJ in Magic 89.9. He entertained me for a few hours by playing great songs non-stop. No commercial breaks. This is what I love about the Strike Zone. Commercial breaks don’t interrupt your flow of good music.

As each song played, I could feel my worries slip away from me. I bounced and twirled in my seat as the beat pounded from the speakers. These songs brought me to a happy inbetween – a place where I had deadlines on top of deadlines waiting for me, but I was happy knocking off those deadlines one by one. Soon enough it was 2 AM and Josh Strike had to sign off. I said goodbye to my savior and continued working, feeling lighter than before.
